Sex Offender Found in Adelaide
MISSING sex offender Sean Broaders has been arrested in Adelaide, despite trying
to fool his captors by shaving off his beard.
He was captured by police in Gouger St at 9:20am Adelaide time and is currently in
hospital undergoing a medical assessment.
He will not be charged with any offences and will be returned to the care of the
Thomas Embling Hospital.
The convicted sex predator, described as a scourge on society who was refused
release because he posed an unacceptable risk, escaped from nurses' care five days ago.
A police source said Broaders, of Auburn, was an imaginative predator who had
preyed on young girls as young as 10 to commit sex crimes.
He escaped while being escorted by Thomas Embling Hospital nurses for an appointment
at Austin Repatriation Hospital about 1pm last Friday.
Security staff contracted to Thomas Embling Hospital, a high-security mental health
hospital, were not required to escort Broaders for the visit.
It is believed the two nurses, who do not have training in transporting prisoners,
lost contact with him during the visit and raised the alarm.
He was admitted to Thomas Embling after his conviction in 1999 for a series of attacks on young women.
He was jailed for four years, 11 months with a non-parole minimum term of three years
after pleading guilty to three charges of indecent assault, including one on a girl, 10.
At the time, the girl's mother said outside court that she feared Broaders would keep
offending.
"You fear these people will not change and then get out of jail and do it again," she said.
In sentencing, magistrate Kevin Mason said Broaders was a scourge on society from whom
the community had to be shielded.
A County Court judge ordered Broaders be kept at the hospital after his sentence expired in 2003.
Police say he has an extensive criminal history dating back to 1989; his first sex assault
conviction was in 1994.
He has been convicted of sexually assaulting eight girls, aged 10-19, including one who
was mentally impaired.
Broaders approached the 10-year-old at the Spiralite Healing Festival in Rye in November
1997, and asked her if she wanted a massage.
He took her to a room, removed her clothes and began to indecently touch her.
A court heard the girl was scared and traumatised and it was believed Broaders would try
to approach her again.
He also indecently assaulted a 19-year-old at the Camberwell market in January 1999 after
he convinced her to let him massage her.
Days later he indecently assaulted a shop assistant at a Burwood store after starting to
give her a leg massage.
Broaders has also passed himself off as a social worker to commit his crimes.
In 1996, he was convicted and fined $500 as a known sex offender loitering outside an eastern
suburbs school.
The 100-bed Thomas Embling has a history of escapes.
At least nine inmates, most with a history of violent crime, escaped on leave between
March 2000 and March 2001.
In November last year, patient Robert Debruyn, who stabbed his mother 57 times, spent
nine days on the run before being found asleep on a Southbank bench.
He had escaped from day release, despite having already escaped four times.
