A Convicted pedophile with a history of abducting young girls remained a high risk of reoffending if released into the community, a court
has heard.
However, the Supreme Court in Brisbane heard if Shane Charles Waghorn continued with one-on-one therapy with a psychologist there was a
chance he could be released later this year on a supervised order.
Waghorn was before the Supreme Court in Brisbane today for another annual review of his indefinite detention.
Two psychiartists - Professor Barry Nurcombe and Dr Jospehine Sunden - agreed that Waghorn remained a high risk of reoffending.
However, both noted that Waghorn had begun one-on-one therapy with a psychologist rather than take part in the High Intensity Sexual Offenders Program.
Professor Nurcombe said Waghorn appeared to be progressing well on the new program, and would benefit from further such therapy.
He said Wahgorn, who had no close friends, had problems in group therapy and had never as a child, adolescent or adult been able to relate to people.
Professor Nurcombe said it was important that Waghorn work on his social skills to allow him to be able to rejoin the community.
Dr Sunden agreed that Waghorn had problems in group situations, and Waghorn believed he was victimised by other prisoners.
She said she would like to review Waghorn after he had completed at least another four months of therapy.
Justice Glen Martin adjourned the hearing until not before December 14 to allow Waghorn to continue therapy and the psychiatrists to then assess him.
He said the Dangerous Prisoners Act was not just to keep prisoners in jail, but also to help them be ready to return to the community.
Waghorn, now 51, was jailed for 14 years in 1992 after he attacked a 10-year-old girl as she walked home along a road.
He grabbed her, forced her into the boot of his car but was chased by a concerned man who saw the abduction.
Waghorn was able to escape and drove the child to a lonely bush area where he bound her hands behind her back and sexually assaulted her.
Police arrived and saved the child from further harm.
In the ACT in 1984, Waghorn was jailed for eight years for abducting a girl, 8, to have carnal knowledge.
He abducted a girl who was with a younger friend. He picked her up, put her in the boot of his car before driving off as she screamed.
After travelling about five kilometres he released the girl from the boot, put her into a seat in the car and then drove to a place where he indecently assaulted her.
He was also convicted of another sexual assault upon a young woman, for which he was sentenced to a concurrent term of one year.
At the end of Waghorn's 14-year jail sentence in Queensland in July 2006, he was detained indefinitely under the state's Dangerous Prisoners (Sexual Offenders) Act.
On three occasions at annual reviews Waghorn was deemed too dangerous to release and his detention order has been maintained.

The then- detective senior sergeant Bourke reviewed files of women who disappeared between October 4 and December 12, 1987,
when Beck and Watts were in Queensland. Before Mrs Feeney's disappearance and Sian Kingi's murder,
the couple tried to abduct three women in Brisbane and Ipswich.
Their approach was always the same – they would park behind an intended victim and Beck,
holding a street directory, would ask for directions until Watts forced the woman into their car at knifepoint.
Chief Supt Bourke said the pair always targeted the same type of victim – petite women with light-coloured or blonde hair.
Watts also liked his victims young – he often made Beck dress in school uniforms – and would spend hours perving on girls
outside of schools and at sporting events.

A HORSHAM man who had a sexual relationship with a girl, 14, and took pictures of other girls posing erotically will be sentenced in early 2010.
Mark Wayne Weaver, 47, formerly of Horsham before being taken into custody on October 31, 2007 when his bail was denied, faced Horsham County Court on Wednesday.
He was convicted of various sexual and child pornography offences against nine victims in the Horsham area from February 1, 1997 to April 2007.
Weaver pleaded guilty to 29 charges including indecent assault, indecent acts with a child under 16, sexual penetration of a child under 16, having produced
child pornography, having procured a child for the preparation of producing child pornography and having possessed child pornography.
He also pleaded guilty to Commonwealth offences of having used a carriage service to menace or harass, having used a carriage service to procure a child for
pornography, having used a carriage service to groom for producing child pornography and having failed to comply with reporting conditions of the sex offences
registry.
Judge Barbara Cotterell said she would sentence Weaver at a date to be fixed, most likely in January or February.
Crown prosecutor Justin Lewis told the court Weaver offered to take photographs of the victims, promising to send them to a magazine to kick-start a modelling
career.
Weaver offered some of the victims money and told them how beautiful they were.
He met the victims at their work, at their father's work or through other people.
He pestered some victims until they agreed to pose for photographs in `sexy' poses.
The photographs included a girl, 15, in her school uniform with the front open to expose her breasts.
Mr Lewis said the child pornography photographs were `at the lower end of the scale' but depicted erotic posing.
``Weaver told her it was okay as long as she didn't show her bits and pieces,'' he said.
In September 2006 Weaver met a girl, 14, via MSN chat on the internet.

Williams was considered so dangerous that he was one of a dozen West Australian men jailed with no set release date after admitting in 2000 to
brutally raping two young girls.

News (9-12-2011)- "Molester filmed girl- sex acts"-
A LAUNCESTON man filmed himself sexually assaulting a seven-year-old girl at a church group and emailed it overseas to child pornographers,
the Supreme Court in Launceston heard yesterday.
Christopher John Wright, 31, of Granville St pleaded guilty to three counts of indecent assault and three counts of committing indecent acts
with a person under 17 years old in February and April last year.
He also pleaded guilty to a total of 10 counts of accessing, producing and possession of child exploitation material.
Wright admitted to police that he was sexually aroused by the girl and by children.
Crown prosecutor John Ransom said other parishioners were in the next room when the assaults took place.
He filmed the act on his iPhone and emailed it to two friends.
Commonwealth prosecutor Ian Arendt said Wright had come to the attention of the FBI in the US who contacted the Australian Federal Police.
When AFP searched the home he shared with his parents they found 2543 images and 206 videos involving children.
There were 16 images and seven videos, classed at level 5, the highest level.
Wright sat in the dock staring at the floor when a sample of the images and videos were shown to Chief Justice Ewan Crawford.
Mr Arendt told the court Wright had been looking at child pornography for at least 10 years.
"He was actively sharing, trading and exchanging child pornography from 36 email addresses with people in many countries
including the UK, France and Germany," he said.
Defence counsel Adrian Hall said that the indecent acts were of short duration and his guilty plea had saved the girl from
giving evidence in court.
"He has been shunned by the church," he said.
Wright had been molested at the age of six but no charges arose.
Mr Hall said Wright had been seeing a psychiatrist because he thought his accessing of pornography was getting out of control.
Justice Crawford remanded Wright in custody for sentence on December 21.
