Cheap Rent A Lure For Sex Assaults
A man who advertised for a female flatmate and then indecently
assaulted her the day she moved in had preyed on his young victim,
a court heard yesterday.
Andrew Peter Scott, 46, of Anderson Road, Sunshine,
pleaded guilty over the June 2003 attack, which occurred
after a 20-year-old woman responded to a newspaper advertisement.
Scott also admitted convictions that included four similar
assaults dating back to the 1970s on women he met after placing
advertisements for flatmates and cleaners.
The County Court heard that Scott's latest offence occurred after
the woman responded to his advertisement for
an "easygoing, free-spirited... slightly rebellious" flatmate.
The rent was $65 a week.
Prosecutor Damien Cosgriff said when the woman moved into the flat
on June 20, Scott spoke to her about nude massages, and asked her
to sign a contract that referred to nudity, special friends and "tossing" - slang for
masturbating.
The court was told he then entered her bedroom and masturbated
in front of her. She said she was "immobilised by shock and fear", but he
grabbed her and stopped her from leaving the room.
He later prevented her from leaving the house. The woman's ordeal ended
when her boyfriend arrived a short time later.
The prosecutor said the cheap rent was designed to attract young and
economically vulnerable women, and he described Scott's conduct as
predatory and well planned.
"This offending is serious in the sense that what it involves is luring
people into his home," Mr Cosgriff said, adding that Scott had a history
of similar behaviour.
In May and December 1997, two women responded to advertisements by Scott
for shared accommodation. When they met Scott, he discussed nudity, and
stripped and masturbated in front of them.
In August 1983, he assaulted a young woman who replied to an advertisement
for a cleaner, while another woman who answered an advertisement for a
cleaner in November 1979 was threatened with violence if she did not
remove her clothes.
Scott... asked her to sign a contract that referred to nudity, special
friends and "tossing".
Psychiatrist William Glasser gave a tentative diagnosis of exhibitionism,
and said Scott had difficulty controlling urges to indecently expose himself.
He said hormonal medication to suppress sex drive could be helpful, but if
he remained untreated he might reoffend.
"This gentleman is a worry, whichever way you look at it."
Defence counsel Chris Pearson said there was no extreme violence
or weapons involved in the incident. Scott had not offended since,
and was amenable to treatment. As part of his bail, Scott is banned
from advertising for flatmates. Judge Wendy Wilmoth will sentence
him today.
