Court Rejects Bid To Extend Paedophile's Jail Term
The Court of Criminal Appeal in South Australia has
rejected a bid by the Director of Public Prosecutions
(DPP) to extend the jail term for a 27-year-old paedophile.
Derek Lee Cambridge is serving a 10 year prison term
for the systematic sexual abuse of young boys he had
befriended at suburban playgrounds.
Cambridge, who videotaped his crimes for his own sexual
gratification, received a non-parole period of
four-and-a-half years.
The DPP applied for leave to appeal the sentence
on the grounds that it was "manifestly inadequate".
Justice John Perry said he believed the sentence
was too low and would have extended the non-parole
period from four-and-a-half years to six-and-a-half years.
However, Justice Ann Vanstone and Chief Justice
John Doyle said while they believed the non-parole
period was low it could not be
considered "manifestly inadequate".
The sentence stands.

I Feel Betrayed. He Will Offend Again....
FACE to face with the
man who sexually abused
their sons, "Mary" and
"Melissa" resisted the urge
to take the law into their
own hands.
Having chased down and
caught Derek Lee Mason
Cambridge, the women and
their husbands handed him over to
the police, placing their faith in the
justice system.
That faith, however, was "betrayed" yesterday, when the Court
of Criminal Appeal refused to increase Cambridge's 10-year sentence.
"We only handed him over in
such good condition because we
thought that justice would be done,"
Mary said outside court.
"Obviously, we were wrong."
Melissa said the refusal had left her
feeling "nauseated".
"I absolutely feel betrayed - in fact,
betrayed is putting it quite mildly,"
she said.
"There is no way this guy feels
remorse for what he has done .., the
only thing that he's upset about is
that he got caught and is out of
action for a while."
Cambridge, of Kurralta Park,
pleaded guilty to committing 18 sex
offences against four boys, including
Mary and Melissa's sons.
The seven-year-olds were lured
into a creek bed by Cambridge, who
offered them money before assaulting and videotaping them.
He was arrested after the boys
recognised him in a park near their
homes, and their families chased him
down, Cambridge's 4-year non-
parole period prompted a Crown
appeal on the grounds it was manifestly inadequate, and could affect
future sex offence sentences.
In a 2-1 decision yesterday, Chief
Justice John Doyle and Justice Ann
Vanstone agreed Cambridge's imprisonment was merciful, but "not
so low" as to be inadequate.
Justice John Perry, dissenting,
said the non-parole period should
have been increased to six years.
Mary said the majority ruling only
increased her family's pain.
"The question remains, what is too
low? What is an appropriate punishment for taking the innocence of four
young boys?" she said.
"I'm so angry, so disgusted ... we
all know he will do it again, and I
feel sorry for the next person who has
to deal with him. Maybe then he'll
be dealt with more strongly."
Melissa said the sentence felt
"more like a countdown" to
Cambridge's release.
"Fear for our son's safety will be
with me for the rest of my life. How
do I know that, one day, he won't be
walking down the street?" she said.
"Imagine the urges that will build
up in him while he is locked away
... he will offend again, that is something I will bet on."
