State: (NSW and formerly of Indonesia- Lombok) Sentence: Sentenced in the Sydney District Court in 2001 to 30yrs jail/ 22 1/2yrs non parole. Convicted 24 child sex offences. PAEDOPHILE Robert Dolly Dunn's final request - to die with dignity outside of jail - has been refused by Corrective Services Commissioner Ron Woodham. Dunn, who has insulted 14 of his victims by refusing to pay more than $250,000 owed to the Victims Compensation Fund, has been refused a request to be released from jail made this week. He is dying in Long Bay jail's hospital with multiple organ failure, including heart and kidney failure. Dunn's rejected request for freedom comes after The Daily Telegraph exclusively revealed he is fighting a compensation bill of more than $250,000 owed to his victims. Australia's most notorious paedophile Robert "Dolly" Dunn had his maximum jail term slashed by 10 years. Dunn was sentenced in 2001 to 30 years jail with a non-parole period of 22 and a half years for 24 sexual offences against young boys over a 10-year period to 1995, and three drug charges. He pleaded guilty to all charges but appealed to the NSW Court of Criminal Appeal to withdraw his pleas on the grounds he was deceived into making them. But the former school teacher on Tuesday lost the appeal to overturn his convictions by withdrawing his guilty pleas. "There was no suggestion in the applicant's written submissions that he did not appreciate the nature of a plea of guilty, or that he did not intend to plead guilty, or that there was any charge in respect to which there was no evidence on which he could have been convicted," Justices Ken Handley, Bruce James and Roderick Howie said in their judgment. Dunn claimed he was induced to plead guilty by the Crown proposing to tender as evidence videos of him molesting the boys. However, the 63-year-old did win an appeal against the severity of his sentence. The sentence was cut by 10 years and the non-parole period by four and a half years. Dunn will now serve a maximum of 20 years' jail, with a non-parole period of 18 years. Justices Handley, James and Howie found that sentencing judge Michael Finnane erred in determining the maximum jail term for some of the offences. " ... the sentences imposed for the offences charged in counts 23, 24 and 25 of the indictment exceeded the maximum sentence ... and consequently, as the Crown conceded, this court must intervene and re-sentence the applicant for these offences," the judges said. They also said Dunn's sentence was manifestly excessive when compared to that of other child molesters. "We are further of the opinion that, notwithstanding the seriousness of the applicant's criminality ... the sentences imposed on the applicant were outside the range of sentences indicated by such cases...," they said. But the judges accepted Judge Finnane's finding that Dunn "has no insight into the depravity of his actions and has not shown any contrition". NSW Opposition leader John Brogden said he was extremely disappointed with the reduction in Dunn's sentence. "He is not an accidental offender. He, through all his history of offence, was an active predator on young boys in an obscene manner," he said. "He has forcibly had sex with young boys against their will and he's now got 10 years off his sentence." Dunn will now be eligible for parole on November 9, 2015. The Age (21-12-2004) |

Serial pedophile Robert Joseph "Dolly" Dunn, serving 30 years for sex crimes, is scheduled to undergo heart bypass surgery at a Sydney hospital this week. Dunn, 63, was diagnosed with a serious heart condition after being transferred from his isolation cell at Goulburn jail to the Prince of Wales Hospital at Randwick in Sydney's east. The former Marist Brother school teacher is being held in the hospital's security wing until his operation, to be performed at public expense by a senior specialist. Dunn was jailed after pleading guilty to 24 counts of sexual offences against boys aged between seven and 15, and for drug offences. The court was told he used money and marijuana to induce the boys into acts of oral and anal intercourse. During sentencing in the District Court in November 1997, Judge Michael Finnane said Dunn, who will be 79 before he is eligible for parole, would remain a danger to children until the day he died. On October 25, Dunn complained of chest pains and was escorted to Goulburn Base Hospital for preliminary tests. Three days later he was transferred to the Prince of Wales, where it was determined he should undergo a heart bypass. Dunn fled abroad in 1996 during Justice James Wood's police royal commission when shocking holiday home videos and photographs became public. They showed him having sex with boys. In August, three judges of the NSW Court of Criminal Appeal heard Dunn's appeal that his sentence had been overly harsh. Their Judgement is expected before Christmas.
