Lawrence John O'Shea, 72, of Adelaide,, appeared in the Supreme Court today to be told of the pain his attacks on children at a Norton Summit holiday camp had caused. But it was outside of court that supporters of the victims truly confronted O'Shea, yelling at and hitting him as he walked away with his head bowed. O'Shea has pleaded guilty to various child sex charges, including several of indecent assault and buggery. In victim impact statements read to the court today, one person said O'Shea's crimes at Camp Sunshine were the "worst kind of evil", while others spoke of their lost innocence and lack of trust. "I felt so terrified. I was a young child, alone on a camp with people I didn't know and I didn't really understand what you had done to me but I felt shame and guilt," one said. "If only you could have one day out of my life to experience the pain you've caused me." One victim's mother said she never wanted to hear O'Shea say "sorry" as it would be a mockery of human decency. Nick Niarchos, for O'Shea, said his client had come to terms with his crimes and was very remorseful for the hurt he caused. "He says now he has expressed acceptance that he is a pedophile and that he has perpetrated great harm on children, the victims of his crimes," he said. "The victims of the offences would not want to hear expressions of regret or sorrow and that's quite understandable." O'Shea has already spent more than 14 years in jail for offences against children and breaching parole conditions. However seven more victims have come forward bringing grounds to the new charges. Mr Niarchos said O'Shea had been the victim of vicious sexual abuse himself as a child and his suffering had continued through harassment and abuse in jail. He said his client should receive a suspended sentence considering the "harsh and sometimes inhumane conditions" imposed on him during previous prison terms. Pedophile runs from cameras
AN elderly man ran from the District Court today, minutes after denying any involvement in the sexual assault of two teenagers in the 1970s. Lawrence John O'Shea, 69, of Adelaide, pleaded not guilty to multiple counts of indecent assault of a male, buggery, indecent interference and gross indecency. Court documents allege the offences span the 1970s, occurring between: AUGUST 1970 and November 1972. MAY 1974 and October 1977. FEBRUARY 1975 and October 1977. MAY 1975 and October 1977. JANUARY 1977 and February 1977. O'Shea's lawyers presented the court with a copy of the allegations signed by their client. He spoke only once, saying "ah, not guilty" when asked how he would plead. He was remanded on continuing bail to appear again in December. Outside court, O'Shea walked a short distance with a supporter before turning and running from the media. Clutching a blue fishing cap to his head, he ran down Gouger St and ducked into the Central Market. O'Shea then met up with his supporter and said it was "easy" to "give the cameras the slip". The conversation, however, was recorded by the media, who had followed O'Shea. Parole Board Cleared Of Child Abuse Liability
The 24-year-old man sued the state because the parole board had allowed serial paedophile Laurie O'Shea to gain access to children by running a computer class in the early 1990s. The young man claims he was sexually assaulted by Laurie O'Shea as a nine-year-old. He sued the state for not properly monitoring O'Shea, who managed to skirt his parole conditions to begin holding computer classes for children. But Supreme Court Justice Tim Anderson today ruled that while the young man's life had been ruined, the parole board did not owe him any duty of care. Justice Anderson said if a duty of care was recognised, it would leave the parole board with conflicting duties and would vastly increase the potential for new liability cases. He said if there had been a duty of care, he would have found the parole board was negligent in its failure to properly supervise O'Shea. AAP (26-4-2005) |

How I Was Groomed For ABuse By A Pedophile
A young man who says he was abused by two paedophiles has given a chilling insight into the mind games used by several predators to groom their victims. Known only as XX, the 24-year-old is suing the State Government, claiming it failed in its duty of care to protect him from Laurie O'Shea and Colin Charles Humphreys. He says O'Shea's release from jail on license triggered a series of events that led to Humphreys kidnapping and abusing him- and ultimately leaving his life in ruins. "I feel pretty lousy...I hate the mistakes I made," he told the Supreme Court yesterday. "I find myself really going back to the mental state I was in.... when I was abused by O'Shea and Humphreys. I just want to hide...I don't want to face what's out there." XX said O'Shea befriended him through a children's computing class at a suburban recreation centre. "The abuse really started with him saying he knew sex between an adult and a child was wrong, but that he loved me and could not handle just being best friends," XX said. "He thought I was grown up enough that it would be OK." He said he and O'Shea engaged in sexual activity at the recreation centre, in O'Shea's flat and XX's own home. "I was to 'become a man'- that's something he told me,' XX said. "At the time I remember feeling superior to children my age because I had a secret, I did grown-up things... while most people were still playing kiss chasey." O'Shea- whose history as a pedophile dates back to the 1960's- was eventually acquitted of abusing XX by the Court Of Criminal Appeal. Between April, 1990, and July, 1991, O'Shea introduced the boy to Humphreys. XX said his relationship with the convicted child stealer was "different". "It was a lot more full-on... he talked very coarsely. The way he spoke and the way he acted was a lot more abrupt," he told the court. He talked about he would like to show me areas of Australia and how it was sad he could not take me away on holiday because my mum hated him. He was talking about running away and living together forever." In July, 1991, Humphreys kidnapped XX and took him to Kings Cross, where he was abused multiple times before police located them. Humphreys was later jailed for eight years. XX said media coverage of his return to Adelaide made returning to school impossible, because of the 'teasing' and academic problems. Who Was Laurence John Edward O’Shea? Whilst serving these prison sentences, O’Shea planned the establishment of the Children’s Foundation of SA, and Camp Sunshine. On completion of his sentence, he turned his plans into reality, and as founder of the association, took the role of Executive Director. A convicted paedophile running a children’s foundation? Only in South Australia!! As expected, O’Shea molested children who attended the camp, and was next charged in 1978 with indecent assault of a 9yr old girl and a 7yr old boy. These assaults took place between 1975 and 1977. On completion of this trial, Justice Jacobs brings new meaning to the word ‘tolerance’ when he says he ‘has some compassion for O’Shea, and acknowledges the good work he has done in the community!!! Do we really think that O’Shea was striving for citizen of the year award when he dreamt up a kiddie foundation and camp? Did he think he was helping the children by molesting them perhaps? Next all too obvious question is, where were the child protection authorities? It makes no sense at all that O’Shea was ever allowed to found and run a children’s establishment of any nature. However it is equally perplexing that the Government child protection bodies failed to protect the children who were then molested whilst on camp with a convicted paedophile!! Now we face the fact that whilst serving his most recent prison sentence, O’Shea was able to re-offend against children whilst ‘under license’. Even more disturbing is that he was able to consort with other known paedophiles, and engage in some ‘kiddie trading’!!! Yet the South Australian Government continues to claim that we (SA) have ALWAYS been the leaders in child protection!!
