PAEDOPHILE Phillip Harold Bell has died in Sydney's Long Bay Jail Hospital following a long battle with a terminal illness. Bell was jailed for 14 years in 1997 for 75 sex offences on 18 boys aged 12 to 15, between 1978 and 1991. A Corrective Services spokesman said the 70-year-old had been transferred to Long Bay's palliative care unit from Goulburn Jail in August. "He's been terminally ill for some time and died in Long Bay hospital in the early hours of this morning," the spokesman said. Bell was two years shy of completing his non-parole period, and would have been eligible for release in November 2007. The spokesman said a post-mortem examination would be conducted and a report prepared for the coroner. AAP (9-9-2005) |
