Betrayal Of Family's Trust

Terrence Allan Ellis befriended a young girl's family and then carried out the ultimate betrayal.
An alcoholic, Ellis was tolerated rather than welcomed at the family home.
But the family's nightmare began when the girl -- just a child -- agreed to accompany him on a walk.
Ellis, 52, suggested a drive instead and her mother reluctantly allowed her to go.
They took off in the vehicle Ellis had borrowed from the girl's father.
When they drove down a track, Ellis began sexually assaulting her.
The little girl bravely fought him off, biting him at first.
At one stage he threatened that if she did not allow him to have sex with her, he would drive "like a maniac" in her daddy's car and get them both killed.
Ellis attacked the frightened girl, eventually driving her home when she promised not to tell anyone what he had done.
In sentencing Ellis last month, County Court Judge Stuart Campbell referred to the "outrageous and disgusting nature" of Ellis' use of a young child "to presumably satisfy some sexual urge which you must have had at the time".
"The effect of your depraved behaviour will have ramifications for (the girl) and her family for at least some time to come," Judge Campbell said.
Ellis, from northern Victoria, was sentenced to five years' jail after pleading guilty to three counts of sexual penetration of a child under 16 and one count of attempted sexual penetration of a child under 16.
Judge Campbell ordered that he be eligible for parole after 3 1/2 years. He has already served 10 months of that sentence while on remand.
Judge Campbell said Ellis had a troubled life and was brought up in a dysfunctional family.
He has a string of convictions dating back to 1972. Judge Campbell said most of them were for alcohol and driving offences. None was for sex offences.
A psychiatric report to the court stated that Ellis has suffered from chronic alcohol dependence since childhood and heroin abuse from middle age.
"Apart from the loss of judgment and self-control when intoxicated, he does not suffer from a serious mental illness," the report said.
"If not for the drunkenness, there is no mental health excuse for the crime he is alleged to have committed."
The report said Ellis was "reactively depressed" with guilt and remorse for what he did.
Another report, from a psychologist, said Ellis had a dull intellectual capacity.
"The alcoholism screening test was indicative of classical symptoms of abuse bordering on rank alcoholism, and personality testing revealed distressed, disturbed emotionality with depression, anxiety, paranoid features and social introversion/withdrawal," it said.
"Clearly his unprecedented offending occurred in the context of chronic alcoholism in combination with a prescribed medication regime which would have obviously impaired his judgment.
"He said he has been as frank as possible with police, did not seek bail and has been accepting of whatever punishment the court might hand down."
Ellis' defence counsel apologised to the victim and her family.
When sentencing Ellis, Judge Campbell said: "I must also take into account that society requires that people such as this victim be protected from people such as yourself."
He jailed Ellis as a serious sexual offender who will have to report to authorities for life.

Pedophile house fire suspicious

Police are treating as suspicious a fire that destroyed the house of a recently convicted pedophile in the state's north.
Victorian police have flown an arson chemist to the scene to establish the cause of the fire.
Meringur post officer worker, Margaret Turvey told theage.com.au that Ellis' house was already repossessed by the bank.
"There are only 16 people who live here and six of those are children," she said.
"We're absolutely horrified at what he did ... and I don't think anyone would have thrown a bucket of water to put the fire out."
Sixteen people live in the small town of Meringur, west of Mildura.
Terrence Allan Ellis was convicted of raping a young girl and sentenced to a minium of three-and-a-half year's jail by the Victorian County Court last month.
A police spokeswoman said the arson chemist would investigate how the fire started.
"The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, we are treating it as suspicious and that's why the arson chemist has been brought in to be able to help us determine whether it was electrical or whether it was fuel or what it was that may have caused the fire," the spokeswoman said.
"Police have interviewed some people but there are still others that need to be spoken to, so it's an ongoing investigation at this stage, there have been no charges and no arrests."
