Family of abused girl attacks ex-MP sex offender
Disgraced former MP Terry Martin, convicted of sex acts with a 12-year-old girl, was yesterday attacked by female relatives
of the child as he walked free from court after being convicted of possessing child pornography.
The former long-standing Tasmanian upper house MP and mayor was attacked outside the Supreme Court in Hobart by two women,
understood to be the aunt and grandmother of his victim.
Clearly distressed, the girl's aunt struck Martin with her bag as he walked from the court grounds into a laneway. She then
appeared to strike his groin, as court officers rushed to defend the former Labor and independent MP.
The grandmother, who is frail and elderly, had moments earlier appeared to strike Martin with her walking stick. "I'll never,
ever forgive you. The devil take you for what you've done," she yelled.
The family members, as well as anti-abuse campaigners, are outraged that Martin, 54, has twice walked free from the Supreme
Court after being found guilty of serious offences.
Last November, Martin was given a 10-month suspended sentence after being found guilty of unlawful sexual intercourse with
the 12-year-old in 2009, and of taking photographs of her naked.
Yesterday, separate proceedings concluded with Martin receiving a one-month suspended sentence for possessing hundreds of
images of child porn featuring children as young as eight.
On both occasions, the judges suspended jail terms on condition of good behaviour after accepting Martin's defence that his
crimes were the result of hyper-sexuality caused by medication taken for Parkinson's disease.
This defence argument, supported by medical reports, has not satisfied anti-abuse campaigners and the family of the girl,
who was prostituted by her mother and a family acquaintance.
Judge Alan Blow said while possession of child pornography would normally dictate a prison term, he accepted that Martin's
offence was related to the side-effects of his medication.
The judge said since dropping the medication, Martin had no interest in child pornography and had "no sexual interest in children".
His sentence of one month's jail was suspended for 21 months.
Martin is understood to have been taken to hospital with a minor head injury after yesterday's attack.
Sex Offender, Terry Martin, Attacked by Two Females
Sex offender, Terry Martin, was attacked by two women as he walked outside the Hobart Supreme Court. Attackers were recognized
as the grandmother and aunt of the 12-year-old girl, who was sexually abused by Martin.
Terry was found guilty of possessing child pornography after he has been convicted of sexual acts with the 12-year-old victim.
Upset female relatives of the girl attacked Martin while he walked on court grounds heading to the laneway. The aunt hit him with
her bag and could have struck his groin before court officers run to defend him.
The weak and old grandmother also tried to hit Martin with her walking stick while shouting they will never forgive him and that
the devil will take him for what he had done.
The 54-year-old former Labor and independent MP has walked free from court for two times now after being convicted of sexual
crimes causing outrage to the family members and anti-abuse campaigners.
Martin was sentenced to a 10-month suspension last November, after he was found guilty of unlawful sexual acts with a
12-year-old girl, and taking pictures of her naked in 2009.
Yesterday, he was granted a one-month suspension sentence after he was found guilty of having hundreds of pornographic
photos of children as young as eight years old.
On both proceedings that were conducted yesterday, the jury dismissed jail terms considering Martin's defense that his
offences were the outcome of his being hyper-sexual after taking medication for Parkinson's disease.
Anti-abuse campaigners and the victim's relatives, however, were not satisfied with the medical reports set to prove
the defense statement.
Judge Alan Blow said he accepted Martin's defense that his misbehavior is a side-effect of his treatment.
Martin was taken to the hospital after having a minor head injury from yesterday's assault.
Ex-MP and sex offender Terry Martin attacked outside court
Convicted child-sex offender and former-MP Terry Martin was attacked a Tasmanian court outside court this afternoon.
In dramatic scenes, the former Legislative Councillor, who was late last year convicted of having sex with a 12-year-old
prostitute, was struck by relatives of the girl as he was being led from Hobart's Supreme Court this afteroon.
Martin, 54, was found guilty of having sex with a child by a jury late last year after he hired the girl who was
being prostituted by her mother and mother's friend in late 2009.
Martin was leaving the Supreme Court in Hobart after being handed a wholly suspended jail term for possessing child pornography.
The girl's grandmother and aunt shouted abuse at Martin as he entered St David's Park just before 4.30pm.
The Parkinson's Disease sufferer was hit in the head with a handbag, struck with the
grandmother's walking stick and apparently punched before security guards and his
defence team managed to free him from the fracas and lead him out of the court to safety.

Former MP Terry Martin walks free after sex with 12-year-old
Terry Martin showed no sign of emotion and refused all requests for comment as he walked free from
the Supreme Court in Hobart this afternoon after he was found guilty of having sex with a 12-year-old girl.
In a surprise move Justice David Porter chose not to jail the former MP and long-serving Glenorchy
mayor instead handing him a 10-month suspended sentence back-dated to November 22 when he was taken into custody.
Martin was last week found guilty of having underage sex - with a 12-year-old girl prostituted by her mother
and mother's friend - in September, 2009.
He pleaded not guilty and argued from the start he believed the girl was 18.
He became involved with her after responding to an ad for her services in the newspaper listing her as "Angela, 18, new in town".
But the jury found he ought to have known she was underage after the nine women and three men
deliberated for several hours on Monday last week.
In light of the massive amount of publicity surrounding the case Justice Porter chose to give
extensive reasons for his decision not to jail Martin - who was found guilty of one count of
sex with a young person under 17 and one of producing child exploitation material.
He was acquitted of a third charge of indecent assault after the jury was unable to reach a
verdict and the Crown elected not to pursue that matter any further.
Justice Porter accepted expert opinions backing up Martin's assertion the medication he was
prescribed for his Parkinson's Disease had caused him to suffer from hypersexuality at the time of his offending.
The judge said he accepted the submission that if Martin had not been taking those drugs he would
not have become "obsessed with sex'' and hooked on prostitutes - and would therefore not
have come into contact with the 12-year-old.
