Third Knox Teacher Admits Abuse of Students
"Knox acknowledges that it is responsible for the welfare and protection of students in its care," John Weeks said. "Parents entrust their children to a school believing that they will be educated in a safe environment. Abuse of a student by a teacher is abhorrent to everything that Knox stands for." Craig Treloar was still teaching at Knox prep school in Wahroonga - and had just returned from a school trip - when he was arrested in February. Facing Central Local Court yesterday, he admitted sex charges against four students, aged 12 and 13, between 1984 and 1987. The 50-year-old has been in custody since his arrest. Dressed in a green prison tracksuit, he appeared via videolink yesterday to be committed for sentencing on seven charges. Treloar was a teacher, cricket and rugby coach and boarding master at the Uniting Church school. He painted himself as the boys' friend, not their teacher. And once he won their trust, he abused them. A tendered prosecution statement said Treloar invited the victims back to his room on school grounds, with the assaults taking place after he showed them pornographic videos. One film depicted homosexual sex between adult men and boys around the students' age. Treloar pleaded guilty to two counts of indecent assault, and committing an act of indecency, against children under his authority. He also admitted inciting a student to an act of indecency, soliciting two others to acts of gross indecency and to possessing child pornography. Interviewed after his arrest, he volunteered information on an offence against one student not previously known to police. He will face the District Court for sentencing on January 22. Outside court Treloar's lawyer, Peter Katsoolis, said the guilty pleas reflected his client's genuine remorse. "At all times he sought to spare the victims," he said. A police investigation into abuse at the school was sparked when two victims, now in their mid-30s, came forward about Treloar. More former Knox students raised allegations of other past assaults. Five former teachers, including Treloar, have been charged. Three have pleaded guilty, while two are still before the courts. A former English teacher, Damien Piers Vance, was placed on a two-year good Behaviour bond in September after pleading guilty to inciting a student to an act of indecency in 1987. Another former Knox teacher, Roger Warren James, pleaded guilty to assaulting a student and committing an act of indecency in 1976. He was given a suspended 12-month jail term last month. In a message yesterday, Mr Weeks said that police had reassured him that no current Knox teachers or support staff were under investigation for alleged child abuse. Police continue to investigate allegations of historic child sex abuse at Sydney's Knox Grammar School, but will not say if more former teachers are being questioned. Police say detectives from Strike Force Arika, established to investigate the allegations, continue to interview a number of witnesses. They would not confirm reports that at least three more former teachers are expected to be questioned. "As the matters are now before the court, it would be inappropriate for police to comment further on the specifics of the investigation," police said in a statement. Knox headmaster John Weeks also declined to comment, saying the school did not wish to compromise the investigation or court proceedings. Adrian John Nisbett, 59, who taught at the northern Sydney school for three decades, appeared in the Downing Centre Local Court on Tuesday, with the matter put over to May 12 for mention. Nisbett, of Wahroonga, faces two counts of indecent assault on a male and two counts of assault and commit act of indecency. The charges relate to alleged child sex offences at the private school between 1976 and 1990. Retired teacher Barrie Tiffin Stewart, 71, of Palm Beach, is charged over four offences allegedly committed against Knox boys between 1984 to 1987. POLICE have received a third round of sexual assault complaints from former students of Knox Grammar School after sexual assault charges were laid against two men. Ku-ring-gai's local area commander, Superintendent Shane White, said police had been given "a good deal of information". Police would not comment on whether the information received on Wednesday and yesterday related to the two men already facing charges - a year 6 teacher, Craig Howard Treloar, and and a former music teacher, Barrie Tiffin Stewart - but would not rule out further arrests or charges. As allegations continued to emerge, former students of the Uniting Church school told of their shock at the arrests. Philip Chu, who left the school in 1998 and is about to join the Tokyo Philharmonic as a conductor, had not been taught by either teacher but said the news of the arrests "comes as a shock to me". Treloar, 49, and Stewart, 71, face four charges each relating to the alleged sexual and indecent assault of three boys aged 10, 11 and 12 in the 1980s. Stewart is charged with abusing a boy on a school camp at Brooklyn in 1984 and of abusing another boy four years later while driving him in a car. In 1987 Treloar is alleged to have behaved indecently with a boy - the same child allegedly abused by Stewart in 1984 - and to have sexually assaulted him twice. It is alleged Treloar filmed him during one act of indecency and involved another boy in an act of indecency. When contacted by the Herald, Ian Paterson, who was headmaster during the period in question, said he would not comment except to express his disbelief that such a thing could have occurred. CRAIG HOWARD TRELOAR, for many years a prep school master at Knox Grammar School, taught his year 6 class on Monday and was then called by Hornsby police to come in for an interview. He went without hesitation but was hit by a bombshell. Two former pupils from the North Shore school had come forward in January and given information that in 1986 he had committed acts of indecency in front of them and with them. At the end of the interview, Treloar, 49, was arrested and put into a cell, and when he appeared in Hornsby Local Court yesterday, he was in handcuffs. Three years earlier, records the journal of Knox rugby supporters, Black&Blue, he had coached the Knox Prep Second XV to a "nail-biting" six-all draw against the Southport School in the Armidale school rugby tournament. Yesterday he sat in the dock, his head in his hands, as the prosecutor Mick Crowther handed the charge sheet to the magistrate Jane Culver, arguing against bail. The charge sheets read that on that day in 1986, Treloar had behaved indecently with a boy and twice sexually assaulted him, filming him during one of the acts of indecency, and that he had then involved another boy in an act of indecency. He had been in a position of authority over the boys, aged 11 and 12. For each charge of sexual assault while in a position of authority, Treloar faces a maximum six years' jail, and for each act of indecency four years. Sergeant Crowther said the case against Treloar was strong and there was a likelihood of a custodial sentence. Bill Dickens, for Treloar, said Treloar was entitled to bail. He said that while the alleged offences were "distasteful", they were not the most serious in that category of offences. Treloar had stable employment, had lived at his address in Hornsby for more than six years, and had no convictions. The alleged offences were 23 years ago and there was no evidence of other offences. Treloar was caring for a frail father, aged 85. He had a close relationship with a sibling in South Australia and a sister from Queensland was prepared to put up $5000 surety for him. Ms Culver said it was not unusual for such victims to come forward years later. She believed that despite arguments in favour of bail, there was a motive for him not to attend court. She remanded him in custody and ordered a brief of evidence be served by March 17. Outside the court, Inspector Mick Banfield said it was possible more charges would be laid. A 49-year-old primary school teacher facing four child sex offences was this morning refused bail by Hornsby Local Court. Craig Treloar, a Hornsby resident who currently teaches at Knox Grammar Preparatory School, sat silently in the dock as Magistrate J Culver refused him bail citing the strength of the prosecution's case and the need to protect the community. He sat in the dock, with his head held in his handcuffed hands, fighting back tears as his case was discussed. Treloar was arrested yesterday afternoon after attending Hornsby police station for an interview. He was charged with two acts of indecency and two counts of indecent assault which he allegedly committed in 1986 against two separate students who were then aged 11 and 12. The police charge sheet says that he instructed students to perform sex acts - and in some cases he filmed sex acts. The prosecution opposed bail referring to "the serious nature and pedophile activity" indicating that further charges were likely to be laid. Treloar's solicitor Bill Dickens said his client had "no criminal record whatsoever", had responded immediately to police requests for an interview and currently cares for his frail and elderly 85-year-old father. Magistrate Culver said that because of the strong case, the high likelihood of imprisonment and the fact that he would not be carrying out his usual employment due to the allegations, there was a risk he would not attend court if he was granted bail.
