Woman allegedly raped at Gallipoli Park near Roma St train station
A man was caught after he was filmed by CCTV repeatedly raping a woman in an inner
Brisbane City park, a court has been told.
The Brisbane Magistrates Court was told the 37-year-old man was nabbed by police at
the scene after he allegedly raped a 31-year-old woman in Gallipoli Park about
Prosecutor Mark Gorton said police would allege the man, who cannot be identified
unless he is committed to stand trial, was filmed by CCTV cameras repeatedly raping
the woman in the park located on the corner of Roma St and Parkland Blvd.
The largely-built man sat in the glass enclosed dock of Court 1 of the Roma St
Magistrates Court for a bail application on Saturday.
Lawyer Gavin Townsing, for the man, said his client had given him instructions
to apply for bail.
However, Snr Sgt Gorton said police opposed the application and tendered an
affidavit containing the reasons against his application for conditional release.
The court was told the man was facing a possible life sentence in jail if convicted of his crimes.
The man, dressed in a brown watchhouse-issue tracksuit, was not required
to enter a plea of guilty to four counts of rape.
Queensland Chief Magistrate Tim Carmody refused the man's bail application and
remanded him to appear in court again on May 12.
Judge Carmody, in denying bail, said: "(I am satisfied) you're an unacceptable
risk of reoffending if released (on bail) and ... (a risk of) endangering the
safety and welfare of members of the community.''
A woman, 31, was taken to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital for treatment.
