US Soldier Jailed For Rape

A US military judge has sentenced a soldier to life in prison with possibility of parole for the rape and murder of a 14-year-old Iraqi girl and her family, a military spokeswoman said.
Specialist James Barker Barker, 23, who plead guilty on Wednesday as part of a plea bargain, was one of five soldiers from the 101st Airborne Division accused in the March 12 killings near the town of Mahmudiyah south of Baghdad.
"Specialist Barker was sentenced to life on Thursday with the possibility of parole,'' spokeswoman Major Mary Constantinsaid.
Lieutenant Colonel Richard Anderson, the military judge who handed down the sentence, said Barker's sentence would not exceed 90 years.
Barker plead guilty to charges of murder, rape, conspiracy to commit murder and rape, obstruction of justice, violating a general order, arson and housebreaking.
As part of the plea bargain, he agreed to testify against the other soldiers who took part in the crime.
The soldiers are alleged to have broken into a house where they raped the 14-year-old girl.
The girl's mother, father and six-year-old sister were killed in another room, and then the 14-year-old was killed and her body set on fire.
One of the five soldiers, Steven Green, was dishonorably discharged in May with a "personality disorder'' and was arrested by the FBI on June 30.
He appeared at a court in Louisville, Kentucky, on November 2 to face rape and murder charges and faces the death penalty if convicted.
Three other soldiers in the case have yet to enter pleas.
