THE mother of murdered
British toddler James
Bulger has tracked down
one of her son's killers but
lost her nerve before she
could confront him.
Denise Fergus had found
out where Robert Thompson,
who was convicted at the age
of 11 alongside Jon Venables
for the murder of two-year-old
James, was living.
More than a decade on from
the court case, she recognised
the child killer at once but was
paralysed by fear on seeing
him in the flesh.
Thompson and Venables,
both now 21, were given new
identities and addresses after
their release from detention in
2001. The News of the World
newspaper says Mrs Fergus
was sent a letter by an anonymous "well-wisher" who said
although they didn't know
where Thompson lived, they
were aware of his movements.
The 37-year-old mother of
three then went to the area
and waited until she found
him in September. "I recognised his podgy face and evil
eyes in an instant," she said.
"It was such a shock to see
him in front of me.
"I wanted to rush up to him
and scream. 'Why did you kill
my child". Yet I was turned to
stone - paralysed with
hatred." Talking about her reaction on seeing Thompson,
she said: "I was close enough
to him to know without any
doubt it was him.
"I was staring at him and he
was none the wiser. Part of me
wanted to jump out of the car
and punch him but I was
paralysed with the hatred I
feel for him. In the end, I just
stared after him as he
wandered down the street."
Mrs Fergus told the newspaper it was now her aim to
track down Venables.
"It gives me a sense of power
knowing I can spot the bastards," she said. "I have no
intention of doing anything. I
just want to know what they
look like and where they are."
Thompson and Venables,
convicted in 1993, spent less
than eight years in detention.
